     Gooch Family


There appears to be two families with the surname Gooch who have Ludham connections. As far as we can see, they are unrelated.

Alfred John Gooch

Alfred Gooch was employed as a gardener at How Hill just before the First World War. He left in 1914 to join up. We already have a page about him on this site. To go to it, click here

Here is some family tree information about him:

Alfred John Gooch was b 1893 Hedenham near Beccles.
He married Evelyn Davies and they had a daughter Barbara.
In 1911 he was a gardener at How Hill Ludham and also connected with Fritton Hall.
He worked there until 1914 when he joined the army for WW1.
He died in Coventry in the Midlands in 1965.
Alfred is living with his parents Alfred Sr and Mary Louise Battrick in 1901 in Ditchingham.
Alfred Sr was b Shottesham near Ipswich in 1863 and died 1940 in Great Gyburgh.
Alfred Sr's father is John Gooch and his mother Ellen.

Arthur R Gooch

In 2015, we had an enquiry from Kathleen MacDonald nee Gooch from Canada. She wrote:

I have in my possession a book which was presented to my father Arthur Gooch from the Primitive Methodist Sunday School.Ludham 1922.He was 11 years old at the time.

The photograph is of my father with me on his knee.This was taken in June 1940 six weeks before he was killed in action on the western front on December 22 1940 He is buried at Halfaya Sollum Cemetery in Egypt.
My father trained at Tidworth and was attached to the 11 Hussars before being transferred as Sgt to the 3rd Hussars before serving overseas.


We have not been able to find any connection with Alfred Gooch's family. Here is some family tree information for Arthur Gooch:

Arthur R Gooch was born Apri,l May or June 1911 (birth record Aylsham 4b79).
He married Mona 1937 Chelmsford (record found).
No family tree is published with him on.
His father Ernest Henry was b 1879 Holm Hale in Breckland area of Norfolk.
Ernest married Florence 1904 Erpingham near Aylsham.
In 1911 just before Arthur was born Ernest is a cowman in Aylsham.
In 1901 Ernest is a shepherd in Holm Hale living with his widowed mother Sarah.
In 1891 not certain where Ernest is
In 1881 Ernest is living with his parents Daniel and Sarah in Tendring.
