     Cook Family

The name Cook crops up from time to time in the history of Ludham village. The corner of School Road and The Street is still known locally as "Cook's Corner". This because the former farmhouse which stands on the corner was once a shop run by the Cook family.
It looks like this today:

When it was a shop, it looked like this:

It looks like there may have been more than one branch of the Cook family in Ludham in the past. Here is some information which may help in your research. Thanks to Tony Cook for providing the information.

This is how Tony fits in to the family:

My great grandmother was  Jemima Cooke nee Purdy. Obviously proud of the Purdy name it was embedded in  my grandfathers name (Simeon Purdy Cook) and that of his four siblings,  William, John , James and George.  John Purdy (Jemimas father) and his wife  Mary Ann  finished their days in Ludham. Jemima's husband was William H Cooke. He was  born in 1841 but another William Cooke was born in Ludham in 1835. This can be confusing.

John Cooke 1731-1803 married Sarah Remmonds 1735-1808. They had a son Robert in 1761 who married Mary Tungate. Amongst their children were Clara aka Clarissa, James Tungate and John. Clarissa gave birth to John 1827, James 1837 and William 1841/2 (Jemima's husband).
James Tungate married Judith and had George 1831, William 1835, James 1838, Charles 1840, Edward 1842, Ann 1844 and Benjamin 1847.
Not to be outdone John married Sarah and had Sarah 1837, Charles 1838, John 1841, Thirza 1848 and Alfred 1849.
Thus there were at least 15 cousins in an 18 year window.
James 1838 lived to be 90, married Ann Smith from Upton in October 1869. They had 9 children starting with James Smith Cooke in 1869. More children were born in Ludham before he moved his family north to Durham between the 1871 and 1881 census dates.

In 1881. Living at How Hill at no 63 we have Mary Ann Purdy and daughter (mother and sister of Jemimah), at no 64 Judith Cooke now a 73 year old widow, at no 65 Judith's son Charles and his wife Martha Selina and at no 66 my William 1841/2 with Jemimah and their first three sons.
